Jobe Shaw
Colliery - Captain - Champion
With promotion to step 4 and the United Counties League Premier North Title wrapped up. Sherwood Colliery captain Jobe Shaw was kind enough to answer a few question regarding the successful season and a quick look ahead to next season.
Jobe's journey at Sherwood has taken him and The Wood from The Central Midlands League to now promotion to step 4 and the Northern Premier League.
From Central Midlands to now UCL North Champions, Youve been on a long journey with Sherwood and a core who have been with you along the way. What does it mean to you to captain and lift the league trophy?
"Its took longer than we had hoped but we never stopped believing we could get this club to step 4, but to lift my first league title as a captain is something I’ll always remember, special moment for me personally and something any player would love to have on the CV"
Some key additions looked on the outside to take Sherwood to another level from last season, Westcarr, Knight, Grant and Jake Wright. You and Jake struck up an instant partnership at the back, just how key has that been for this successful season?
"Adding the players we have to the squad, was a mix of quality and experience, this helping the younger lads in difficult moments creating a much more balanced team in my eyes! We added leaders and that has been the real difference for me, setting high standards and pushing players to new levels!
As for Jake coming in, although I’m 30 and got plenty of experience myself, the guy has played at an unbelievable level and has been a privilege to play alongside, 21 clean sheets in the league says it all really, I feel we compliment each other perfectly!"

Worthy champions, at what point of the season did you think that you can go on and not just get promoted but also win the league?
"From the first day of pre season we always set out to go win the title and we didn’t ever doubt we would do so, but until it was won we just went about our business ticking one game off at a time, I guess until Christmas has been and gone it’s a case of let’s see where we are at then knuckle down and bring it home! We topped the table for a lot of the season, obviously we were full of confidence and the win away at Lincoln really was the point we made our claim!"
4) From personally watching you over the years, every level you've played at, you've been a standout player as one of the best defenders in the league. Are you looking forward to step 7 and up for the challenge?
"Appreciate that, im an honest player, always giving 100%, I’ve played at step 4 many years ago now and know I have what it takes, but I’m afraid its the end of the road for me at Sherwood (family commitments), finishing on a high though and delivering as we’ve promised for years, but I have no doubt the boys who are staying and the new lads that the gaffer brings in they will be just fine and hopefully they can kick on again!!"
Thank you Jobe for your time and answering my questions. Its been a pleasure watching you in the Blue and Black of Sherwood and as i mentioned in the question. Whatever level you've played at, you've been the stand out as one of the best centre halves in the league. Best of luck wherever you end up upon leaving Sherwood and whoever signs you will have got themselves one hell of a player.
